How to adjust tension spring on an overhead garage door.
Lower the door and use 2 metal rods to adjust the tension in the spring.
This cone has notches in it that are used to adjust the tension in the torsion spring.
If the door lifts by itself or if it is hard to pull down you will need to unwind the springs.
If you need to increase the spring tension hook the spring onto a lower hole on the track hanger.
Lift the door and check the balance.
Also yank the cord and unplug the garage door opener before you start any garage door spring repair.
If the door is hard to lift or if it is too easy to pull down you will need to wind the springs.
Once your garage door is secured remove the spring hook from the track hanger which will allow you to move the hook and adjust the spring s tension.
This will prevent the door from shooting up and breaking your nose when you wind the new springs during an overhead garage door repair.
Look for a reddish cone on the torsion spring.
This is accomplished by opening the garage door as fully as possible until it hits the stop bolt on the track.
Then insert another rod into a hole below the rod you already inserted.
You must release the tension on the garage door springs before attempting adjustment or replacement.
Hold the garage door in this position by attaching a c clamp to the track at a point below the lowest door roller wheel.
Install a vertical two by four brace at the outer edge of the door to prevent the door from falling.
Open the door fully to relieve the tension on the hinge springs at each side of the door opening.
Clamp a locking pliers or a c clamp to the track just above one of the rollers.
This can make the other parts of the garage door last a much longer time.
