The clearance needed to install this hardware is 3 1 8 which includes at minimum a 1 2 of wiggle room.
Single track bypass requires 7 inches.
Generally at least a 6 inch clearance is recommended but there are hardware options that work with less room.
Always remember that your barn door railing system should be at least double the width of your door frame possibly longer if you have an odd shaped door.

To have privacy the door usually overlaps the opening by an inch so that a 2 6 opening will require a 2 8 door.
